Classic (conventional) dental implants represent two-piece implants used to replace one or more missing teeth. They consist of a titanium screw, which is surgically inserted into the soft, spongy jawbone and an upper part known as the abutment that further holds the restoration – a crown or a bridge. The complete treatment takes between 3 to 6 months due to the specifics of the soft bone that requires a longer period for the implant integration.
The important thing with conventional implants is that they require a minimum of bone in the spongy area to be available for their insertion. Very often, patients are facing severe bone resorption (bone loss) and this consequently leads to the necessity of additional surgery procedures for achieving bone augmentation such as bone grafting. Another disadvantage deriving from bone resorption is that the area below the sinus becomes very thin and therefore needs to be avoided when inserting the implants. An additional procedure is applied, known as sinus-lift.
CHARACTERISITCS OF CLASSIC DENTAL IMPLANTS
Used for full-mouth restoration, replacement of one tooth or segments of missing teeth:
The total treatment and healing time takes from 3 to 6 months split into 5 different steps:
Step 1: Surgical intervention – the implant is inserted. This step also includes teeth extraction in cases when necessary. It is also known as the Osseointegration period during which the implant fuses with the bone. This can take 2-3 months for the lower jawbone and 4-6 months for the upper jawbone.
Step 2: During this step the cover screws of the implant are removed and replaced with the gingiva former – healing abutment (this step can often be merged with Step 1 whenever there is an extraction preceding the implant placement).
Step 3: Impressions are taken.
Step 4: Try-in of the crown/crowns.
Step 5: The final restoration is placed (cemented or screw-retained depending on whether it is a bridge or set of crowns).
Temporary constructions are used for full-mouth restoration:
Fixed, metal ceramic constructions:
The treatment plan is proposed to the patient after submission of a personal X-ray (OPG) or 3D digital scan examination (CBCT) and check-up at the Clinic. Treatment appointments are booked according to the Dentatime schedule availability.
