What is oral surgery?

Oral surgery is a specialised field within modern dental medicine. It deals with the diagnosis and surgical treatment of diseases, injuries and defects of the teeth, oral cavity, jaws and surrounding structures. 

This field requires in-depth knowledge of maxillofacial anatomy and mastery of modern surgical techniques to ensure safe and effective treatment.

Wisdom tooth extraction (removal of impacted teeth)

Wisdom tooth extraction is one of the most challenging procedures in oral surgery. Impacted teeth, particularly wisdom teeth, also known as third molars, are often completely or partially covered by bone and can cause pain, inflammation or damage to neighbouring teeth.

Removal of dental and other cysts

A dental cyst is a pathological formation that can cause serious complications if not treated in time. The surgical removal of cysts requires precise technique and knowledge of the anatomy of the jaws. Following a consultation and diagnostic imaging, our team plans the optimal approach for the complete removal of the cystic formation.

Apical osteotomy

Apical osteotomy is the surgical cutting of the bone at the root tip, most commonly affected by an inflammatory process that cannot be treated conservatively (granuloma, foreign body, cyst, etc.). This procedure is performed when conventional root canal treatment cannot resolve the problem and serves as an alternative to extraction.

Surgical exposure of impacted teeth

This procedure is performed to surgically expose impacted and atypically (in an unusual, incorrect position) positioned teeth, with the aim of subsequent orthodontic treatment to restore them to their correct position in the dental arch. The procedure requires coordination between the oral surgeon and the orthodontist to achieve optimal results.

Surgical closure of sinus perforations

The surgical method for closing the communication between the oral cavity and the maxillary sinus is an important procedure in cases of complications arising from tooth extraction in the upper jaw. Timely closure prevents infections and complications.

Sinus lift – raising the sinus membrane during implant placement

A sinus lift is a surgical procedure involving the elevation of the sinus membrane and bone augmentation, required when placing dental implants in the posterior region of the upper jaw, where bone is often insufficient. This procedure allows for successful implantation even in cases of significant bone resorption

Bone grafting (bone augmentation)

Surgical restoration of bone volume, height and density is critical for the successful placement of dental implants. There are various techniques for bone augmentation aimed at restoring aesthetic and masticatory function and creating optimal conditions for implantation.

Plastic surgery, gum augmentation (soft tissues)

Soft tissue grafting and gum augmentation are important procedures in modern periodontology and cosmetic dentistry, which improve gum health and the aesthetics around teeth and implants.

Histological examination of tissues

When pathological lesions are removed, the tissues are sent for histological examination to rule out malignant changes and confirm the diagnosis.

Treatment of trauma

Oral surgery also includes the treatment of various traumatic injuries to the teeth, jaws and soft tissues of the oral cavity.

Other surgical procedures

Treatment of jaw fractures, biopsies and abscesses. An abscess is an acute purulent inflammation that requires urgent surgical intervention—an incision to drain the accumulated fluid in the area of the infection.

Frequently asked questions

Following surgery, it is normal for the patient to experience some discomfort, which is usually well managed with painkillers. In the first 24–48 hours, there may be slight swelling and bleeding, which gradually subsides. 

The alternatives depend on the specific case: root canal treatment for infections, periodontal treatment, bridges or dentures instead of dental implants, and orthodontics for misaligned teeth.
