Periodontology

Gum health is the foundation of a beautiful smile and the long-term preservation of natural teeth. Maintaining perfect oral hygiene is important for preventing the development of oral mucosal diseases and serious gum problems. Timely prevention of periodontitis can stop the disease from progressing, which can lead to tooth loss.

What is periodontology?

Periodontology, a specialised branch of dentistry, deals with the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of diseases of the gums and the supporting structures of the teeth.

The periodontium, also known as the periodontal ligament, comprises the tissues that surround and support the tooth: the gums (gingiva), alveolar bone (alveolus), periodontium and root cementum. When these tissues are healthy, the teeth are stable and functional. However, when periodontal diseases develop, this can lead to serious consequences, including tooth loss.

The two main types of gum disease are gingivitis and periodontitis. Gingivitis is the initial inflammation of the gums, usually caused by a build-up of tartar and bacterial plaque.

The main symptoms of gingivitis include redness, swelling and bleeding of the gums when brushing. If not treated in time, gingivitis can progress to periodontitis – a more serious condition in which the inflammation spreads deeper and affects the bone tissue.

There are many causes of periodontitis – ranging from poor oral hygiene and smoking to infectious diseases. The link between diabetes and gum health warrants particular attention, as diabetes significantly worsens gum health. Hormonal changes and genetic predisposition also play a role. People often use the term ‘periodontosis’ to refer to advanced periodontitis with significant bone loss.

What treatments do we offer?

The expertise and clinical experience of our dentists at Dentatime Clinic are key to the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of a range of periodontal diseases (affecting the tissues that surround and support the teeth).

Most commonly, these are gingivitis and periodontitis, which are caused by bacteria present in dental plaque that damages the periodontal tissues. The main symptoms and complaints associated with these conditions are primarily linked to poor oral hygiene, irregular preventive care and a genetic predisposition.

Symptoms include:

  • Receding gums; tooth loss or gaps between teeth;
  • Bleeding gums;
  • Bad breath;
  • Pain;
  • Bone loss (bone pockets).

The treatments offered by Dentatime Clinic for periodontal problems are carried out using modern diagnostic imaging equipment and the latest generation of ultrasonic devices and the Air Flow system for polishing with powder, air and water.

The main therapeutic procedures used in these cases are painless and cause minimal discomfort to the patient.

Removal of tartar, plaque and deposits

This is the fundamental procedure in the treatment of gingivitis and the early stages of periodontitis. It involves deep cleaning of the teeth using an ultrasonic scaler and allows the removal of bacterial deposits below the gum line.

Air Flow polishing

This modern polishing technology ensures a smooth tooth surface, which makes it harder for plaque to build up again and helps maintain good gum health.

PRF (Platelet-Rich Fibrin) Treatment

A revolutionary technology (new method) for the rapid regeneration of soft and hard tissues. The product obtained, after taking blood from the patient’s vein, is rich in growth factors that significantly accelerate the formation of new blood vessels and bone. It can be used in all healing processes – tooth extraction, periodontal treatment, treatment of recessions, etc.

Surgical treatment

In advanced cases of periodontitis, when conservative methods are insufficient, surgical treatment may be required to clean deep periodontal pockets.

Treatment with basal implants

Basal implants are a suitable method for restoring lost teeth in cases of advanced periodontitis (periodontal disease), particularly where there is significant bone loss.

They allow for the complete restoration of an entire jaw in cases of total edentulism, as well as individual segments of missing teeth with immediate-load implants in just 3 to 5 days.

Regular check-ups every 4 to 6 months are recommended to maintain optimal oral hygiene and for early prevention.

Patients are advised to share their full medical history with the dentist, particularly if they have chronic conditions or are taking medication that may affect the treatment process.

It is also important to follow the dentist’s recommendations regarding maintaining good oral hygiene at home – regular brushing, flossing and using an antibacterial mouthwash.

Splinting of loose teeth with Kevlar fibres and composite

In cases of advanced periodontitis, where teeth become loose due to bone loss, splinting is used in clinical practice to provide stabilisation without compromising the integrity of the teeth (no grinding). This technique is an alternative treatment that helps to preserve natural teeth for longer.

How long does periodontal treatment take?

The duration of periodontal treatment varies depending on the severity of the condition and the individual characteristics of each patient. Treatment for gingivitis usually requires one to two sessions of professional cleaning and polishing, after which symptoms improve significantly within a few days to a week.

Treatment for periodontitis, however, is a longer process. If tooth splinting or surgical treatment is required, this will add extra time to the overall duration of therapy.

The active phase of treatment is followed by a period of healing and monitoring, which usually lasts around three months. During this time, the patient attends the clinic for follow-up appointments to assess the tissues’ response to treatment.

With PRF therapy, the recovery process can be significantly accelerated, with gum health improving more quickly thanks to natural growth factors.

Frequently asked questions

Periodontitis can be controlled and stabilised with appropriate treatment and regular maintenance therapy, but complete reversal of bone loss is only possible to a limited extent. The key is early diagnosis and consistent treatment.

The modern periodontal treatment techniques we use at Dentatime Clinic are painless and cause minimal discomfort. Where necessary, we use local anaesthesia to ensure the patient’s complete comfort.

Perfect oral hygiene (regular brushing twice a day, using dental floss and interdental brushes), a healthy diet, giving up smoking and regular check-ups are the most effective methods for preventing periodontitis and maintaining gum health.
